Department & Position Background:
The Biosafety team manages a set of programs, resources, and services for the biological research community and stakeholders in order to cooperatively manage risks associated with research involving biological agents. The biological safety program portfolio at Cornell University includes agricultural, animal, arthropod, plant, and standard laboratories, field research, and clinical trial support. We engage with the university community from the bench to executive leadership and external partners. 

Key Responsibilities: 
The primary function of the specialist position is to provide efficient delivery of EHS biosafety services. They will develop and implement procedures and programs that promote a safe, responsible, healthful, and compliant work environment for these areas.  All programs under this position’s function must be in a sustainable state of “in-control and capable” functionality.  The position will perform functions supporting the Cornell University Biosafety program for the Ithaca campus and outlying facilities, except for the Weill Cornell Medical campuses. The position will report to the university biosafety officer. 

Core Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences, safety, industrial hygiene, public health or closely related field, with two to three years working experience in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR, Master’s degree and less than six months of working experience in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have a strong background in the biological sciences including laboratory experience, and a working knowledge of a variety of regulatory and general biological safety standards including the NIH and CDC.
  • Strong communication and prioritization skills are important as this position will work with a variety of diverse stakeholders and situations
  • Ability to pass an FBI Department of Justice background check as required by Federal Select Agent Program.
  • Must have a valid NYS Driver’s license (or the ability to obtain one within 1 year) and a good driving record.
