Business Development Manager - Radiation Protection

Today, about 330 people are working for BERTHOLD TECHNOLOGIES worldwide, more than 250 at the Bad Wildbad headquarters. Our qualified personnel consist primarily of engineers and technicians who are in charge of production. More than 40 physicists, engineers and technicians in research and development are responsible for both the conception and realisation of new and innovative products. Our application specialists and project engineers in the sales department prepare customised measurement solutions, while our experienced service staff ensures smooth installation and start-up at the customer’s site.

We place great emphasis on the training of our employees; about 10% of our staff is trainees. In addition, we are a partner company teaching engineering students on-the-job in the course of their study at the Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg in Karlsruhe. The continuous training of our staff is an essential of our company’s mission.

The Radiation Protection (RP) Division Business Development Manager is a new position which will play a key role in the growth and success of Berthold Technologies USA, LLC.

Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Business Development Manager is responsible for all aspects of business development, marketing, and directing the sales strategy for Berthold's Radiation Protection Division in the USA. The primary goal of the Business Development Manager is to increase sales and market share in the USA for Berthold Technologies' RP Division.

Responsibilities also include customer relationship development, contract negotiations, and project coordination. The Business Development Manager works closely with the worldwide RP Division team to provide guidance and direction of the business unit by contributing to strategic and long-range planning. The Business Development Manager assists the General Manager at Berthold USA in creating the corporate bookings plan and is directly responsible for development and implementation of sales activities that will achieve the bookings plan.

The Business Development Manager should be self-directed, responsive to customer's needs, and willing to go the extra mile to get the job done. A willingness to travel is essential. Starting in the second year of employment, typical domestic travel requirements are in excess of 50% of the time, with occasional international travel. 

During the first year of employment, the Business Development Manager will reside in Germany, working at the factory to develop a level of knowledge about Berthold's business that will allow him/her to be self-sufficient upon returning back to their permanent assignment in Oak Ridge, TN. The Business Development Manager should be prepared to devote whatever amount of time is necessary to meet his or her responsibilities.

The Business Development Manager must be creative and knowledgeable about proven business-to-business sales strategies, with the ability to generate innovative ideas leading to business growth in core industries such as National Research & Accelerator Laboratories, Nuclear Medicine, and Nuclear Power Utilities. Strong leadership skills are needed to influence and guide corporate sales team members toward success in the US market.

Other specific responsibilities include the following:

  • Establish annual and quarterly sales plans that will achieve gross margin requirements as set by the General Manager.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual sales forecasts
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key decision-makers at National Research and Accelerator Laboratories, influencing them to establish Berthold Technologies as a preferred vendor for radioactive air & stack monitors, hand & foot monitoring, and neutron monitoring.
  • Develop and implement a market-access strategy for the nuclear medicine market
  • Consistently utilize Berthold's CRM software to maximize the efficiency of the sales process and keep records of accounts, contacts, sales activities and projects.
  • Cultivate relationships with parent-company team members (Berthold-Germany) and the global sales/support team
  • Plan and manage effective participation in trade-shows, conferences, and relevant industry or standards organizations
  • Conduct market & competitor analyses to ensure Berthold stays ahead of industry needs & competitors
  • Oversee the negotiation of any special customer contracts, terms, discounts, etc.
  • Responsibly manage expenses associated with sales and marketing activities

This position is an extremely challenging role;
The Business development manager must be adept at achieving results through other people.  Berthold USA is a small business, with an "everyone roll up your sleeves" mentality. Resources are limited. Active leadership and communication is essential to ensure customers are being served to the highest possible standards.

Preferred candidates will meet the following requirements:

  • Knowledge of basic principles of health physics and radiation detection & monitoring
  • Degree (advanced degree preferred) in Health Physics, Physics, or another relevant scientific discipline
  • 5 years of sales experience in nuclear power, health physics, or nuclear medicine industry
  • Self-motivated with excellent organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills. This position requires the ability to work well with all departments of the company (international and domestic) as well as an ability to influence customers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel, domestically and internationally, up to 75% of the time
