Environmental Engineer - Hazardous Waste

Aerojet Rocketdyne seeks an Environmental Engineer - Hazardous Waste Specialist (SH&E) for our Canoga Park, California facility.

The Environmental Engineer- Hazardous Waste Specialist, will be responsible to develop, implement, oversee and audit all aspects of a hazardous waste program to ensure compliance with all Federal, State and Local regulations. This position may be filled at this level or one level higher.

Essential Job Functions:

  • The Environmental/Waste Specialist Engineer, will be responsible to develop, implement, oversee and audit all aspects of hazardous waste and industrial waste water program to ensure compliance with all Federal, State and Local regulations. This includes:
  • Coordinate and review all drum labels, placarding, manifest and land disposal restriction documentation and/or shipping papers for all shipments of hazardous waste.
  • Review all point of generation (POG) containers and 90-day accumulation yard to ensure hazardous waste is properly stored.
  • Develop and implement a waste characterization plan to identify and characterize all hazardous waste.
  • Oversee permit by rule hazardous waste treatment operations.
  • Develop and give hazardous waste training as needed to ensure site’s compliance.
  • Prepare all correspondence, plans and reports as required by regulators.
  • Prepare response to all inquiries from regulatory agencies regarding the hazardous waste program.
  • Oversee operation of the industrial waste water treatment operations, including operator training, waste water characterization, total productive maintenance program, permitting, regulatory inspection support, compliance reporting, calibration program, procedure development, training program development and delivery, treatment system design, and new manufacturing process development.
  • Contract management including scope of work development, purchase order management, invoicing payment.
  • Vendor auditing as required by company policies.
  • Regulation review and impact/gap assessments
  • Obtain all necessary permits, certifications, etc., for hazardous waste management.
  • Escort all regulatory agency personnel and provide support as needed when they conduct their periodic regulatory inspections.
  • Coordinate hazardous material/ waste contractor to package and transport waste to TSDF, to clean facilities and equipment, and to respond to spills or releases as needed.
  • Conduct SH&E contractor orientation at the start of each job to ensure they can identify the hazards of the job/location and are aware of what to do in an emergency, in addition to understanding our standard SH&E rules and standard work.
  • Review and approve operating procedures, facility and equipment design, which may include investigation of working conditions and technical procedures for the purpose of identifying potential hazards.
  • Conduct periodic and special audits and inspections of equipment, sites, facilities and operations to identify environmental hazards and perform job safety analyses.
  • Recognize, evaluate, and recommend measures for control of chemical, safety, and physical hazards present at work sites.
  • Recommend SH&E standards for the handling, storage and transportation of hazardous materials and hazardous waste.
     

Requirements:
Requires a BA/BAS in Science/Engineering or a related discipline and nine (9) years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Desired qualifications include, basic Chemistry courses; HAZWOPER; Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM). Desirable classes/ curriculum would include water chemistry, water treatment, and industrial wastewater design.
