Environmental Engineer - Water

Georgia-Pacifc is hiring an Environmental Engineer - Water at our Cedar Springs, GA facility. The Cedar Springs Mill is one of the largest producers of containerboard in the United States. The customer base includes external and international customers as well as internal Georgia-Pacific box plants.  The mill, located in Cedar Springs, Georgia, is about 30 miles from Dothan, Alabama.  In operation since 1963, this mill employees around 500 people.

This role will work within the Cedar Springs Environmental team, helping ensure compliance with state and federal environmental regulations for this global supplier of containerboard. The selected individual will be expected to implement and maintain environmental management systems that promote environmental excellence.  In addition, they will support the facility’s efforts in conforming to company policies and procedures, such as Georgia-Pacific's Environmental Compliance Standards.  This role will initially be focused on water and wastewater compliance and permitting. However, as a member of the mill’s environmental team, this role will eventually grow in proficiency to provide assistance across all environmental media and programs.
A Day In The Life Typically Includes:

  • Obtain and maintain necessary environmental permits and licenses
  • Provide support in maintaining compliance with environmental permits and regulatory requirements, including managing the mill’s onsite wastewater treatment system
  • Prepare and submit required regulatory reports to outside agencies
  • Perform release reporting and recordkeeping as required by company policy, environmental regulations, and environmental permits
  • Monitor key compliance metrics and implement corrective and preventive actions to continually improve performance
  • Serve as a point of contact for environmental support for the facility and rotate with other team members to provide support on weekends and holidays
  • Identify and implement required training for operations, maintenance, engineering, and other facility staff
  • Develop and manage systems to maintain adherence with the company compliance standards
  • Maintain and grow knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, as well as environmental process technologies
  • Identify cost effective solutions to proactively address environmental issues, working closely with internal, corporate subject matter experts as needed
  • Professionally represent the facility at agency meetings and during agency inspections
  • Share knowledge with Environmental Engineers from other GP facilities and participate in internal audits of other facilities
  • Interact with division/corporate environmental and legal resources to seek the best knowledge
  • Possess Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Posess the ability to work in a team environment, including a willingness to reach out to others for input on issues as needed
  • Demonstrate strong analytical skills with attention to detail

What You Will Need:
Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering, Pulp & Paper Technology, or other engineering or physical science discipline

What Will Put You Ahead?
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three (3) or more years’ experience in an environmental engineering role
  • Experience working in pulp & paper or a similar process industry as an environmental engineer or equivalent process role with environmental involvement.
  • Experience managing compliance with laws and regulations for water and wastewater compliance and permitting
