Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist II

Position Summary: 
Responsible for creating, coordinating, implementing and auditing environmental, health and safety programs to meet internal requirements as well as compliance to government regulations. Maintain knowledge of current industry and regulatory trends and provides subject matter expertise to plant in this area.  Help develop long-range plans to continuously improve plant environmental, health and safety. 
 
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
• Review OSHA safety, fire safety, environmental, industrial hygiene and hazardous material programs and implements to site level standards. Review and audit site programs for compliance.
• Complete EHS evaluations for new projects and equipment modifications.    
• Investigate employee incidents and concerns regarding safety, health and industrial hygiene, ergonomics, etc.
• Develop and conduct safety training as needed (New Employee orientation, Respirator, Lockout / Tag out (LOTO), Confined Space, Electrical, and machine guarding).
• Conduct industrial hygiene monitoring such as noise and air.
• Perform follow-up and ensure closure of safety and health recommendations from various Corporate organizations and internal/external audits and as assigned by manager.
• Manage and coordinate emergency response team (ERT), medical team recruitment, training and response for both sites.
• Perform various safety and environmental inspections for EHS Programs such as; Storm water, SPCC, Hazardous Waste, Spill Response, SCBA, slings, ladders, compliance.
• Coordinate hazardous material shipments and complete environmental and hazardous material regulatory reporting with manager oversight.
• Responsible for chemical hazard awareness, hazmat shipment oversight and contractor safety programs.
• Assist and conduct ergonomic assessments and provide necessary support
• Serve on site Safety Teams and assist in improvement activities and projects.
• Follow up on inspection program findings and hazard reports as assigned.
• Conducts risk assessments and equipment surveys for safe guards, guarding, lock-out requirements.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.  Primary focus may be safety or environmental related based on education and/or experience.
 
Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:
• Strong interpersonal, organizational and customer service skills are a must.  
• Must be able to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines. 
• Must understand various OSHA, EPA, TCEQ, DOT, IATA regulations. 
• Computer and application proficiency needed, as well as knowledge of EHS management systems.
• Demonstrated project management skills of organizing tasks to successfully complete projects within selected time frames established.  
• Related work at a site with Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) a plus.
• First aid/CPR, other medical certifications, training certifications or emergency response experience a plus.
 
Education and Experience: 
• Minimum 3 years EH&S experience required.
• Bachelor’s Degree is required: Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), Engineering, EHS Management, or applicable sciences.
• Prefer ASP, CSP, CHMM or CIH or similar certifications.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must pass pre-employment drug screen and background check.
 
Travel Requirements:
• Typically requires travel 5-20% of the time.
 
Physical Requirements and Work Environment: 
• Work in office areas, manufacturing areas, outside, controlled and cleanroom environments and laboratories.  
• Can be exposed to noise, chemicals and weather.  
• Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).  
• Must be able to certify in confined space entry and work in confined space.  May work outside.  
• Lifting requirements of at least 25 lbs.; Infrequent lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to walk up and down stairs and stand for 1 to 2 hours at a time
• Confined Space Entry and ERT training related stresses (i.e. ability to don a SCBA)
