Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist (2 positions)

WSU is seeking qualified applicants for two Environmental Health & Safety Specialists to Implement and monitor university-wide Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) systems and processes by managing EHS administrative processes, conducting training, implementing and monitoring critical controls, and using a range of EHS tools and processes to implement programs and drive regulatory compliance.

EHS functions: Implement, develop, and maintain EHS procedures policies and work instructions. Coordinate assessments and audits and communicate the corrective actions, prepare reports and maintain documentation of audits. Perform IH monitoring, sampling and testing. Coordinate EHS initiatives, participate in university committees, interact with and support administrative, academic, research labs, and other departments. Provides management and training on various EHS programs. Coordinates a comprehensive program of collection and record keeping of data for the university-wide inventories. Provides for the collection, storage, transportation, and shipping of dangerous goods and waste management. Coordinates with appropriate university personnel on the university sustainability and conservation efforts and with public health and sanitation. 85%

Emergency Responder and Life and Fire safety: Provide services for hazardous material releases, odors, and emergency situations. Serve as emergency responder and be on call periodically 24 hours/day 7 days/week. Maintain EHS equipment inventory, calibrations, and equipment in ready status. Research, monitor and evaluation current trends in area of life and fire safety and emergency to provide relevant and current guidance. 5%

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific or engineering field such as Environmental Health and Science, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Project Management, Science or equivalent and four (4) years of safety related experience; OR an Associate’s degree in an appropriate scientific field such as Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Project Management, Science or equivalent and seven (7) years of direct safety related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must participate in a University medical surveillance program and be able to pass a physical examination to allow for emergency response and wearing of personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to use word processing, spreadsheets and databases.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; organization and customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply relevant standards, regulations, and guidelines to the work environment and emergency preparedness, response, and recovery activities.
  • National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) ICS-100 and IS-700 certification required within one year in order to respond to emergency situations in an effective capacity.
