Environmental, Health & Safety Officer (EHS)

Hovione is an international company with over 55 years’ experience in the development and compliant manufacture of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients and Drug Product Intermediates. With four FDA inspected sites in Portugal, the U.S., Ireland and China, Hovione offers integrated API, particle design, formulation development and GMP manufacturing. In the inhalation area, Hovione is the only independent company offering such a broad range of services.    

Hovione is making a definite move into Continuous Manufacturing with a state-of-the-art facility in New Jersey and is now hiring. We are looking for strong professionals for this exciting and innovative project.

We are recruiting for the following position at our U.S. site located in East Windsor, NJ:

EHS Officer

This ideal candidate in this position will ensure sit activities at Hovione NJ are carried out in compliance with all Federal, State, and Local HSE regulations as well as manage all aspects of the site Health, Safety and Environmental Programs at the NJ site.

Main responsibilities:

  • Provide EHS site leadership and alignment with Corporate EHS policies.
  • Participate on the Site Leadership Team (SLT).
  • Chair and direct the efforts of the site Safety Committee.
  • Serve as the functional liaison between Hovione NJ and Federal, State, and local EHS agencies with regards to communication and audits.
  • Conduct periodic audits of the site and procedures to ensure the EHS management systems are functioning properly.
  • Provide periodic reports to management on the status of the EHS management systems as well as recommendations to maintain the site VPP-STAR status.
  • Track environmental regulatory applicability to new regulations at both the State and Federal level.
  • Establish and maintain team spirit and safety culture at Hovione by fostering strong employee engagement.
  • Champion the EHS OSHA VPP Management System elements and maintain VPP Star Site status.
  • Manage Safety Coordinator and Environmental Specialist roles at the site.
  • Lead accident investigations and ensure corrective actions are implemented in a timely fashion to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Maintain all relevant OSHA and Corporate EHS reporting metrics.
  • Maintain an open communication/transparency with employees concerning EHS including but not limited to site metrics, accident investigations, safety alerts, safety concerns and corrective actions to recent incidents.
  • Manage the Occupational Medical Program (i.e. Annual Medical Surveillance, Noise and Chemical Exposure Monitoring).
  • Manage OSHA Process Safety Management Programs (PSM) elements, as applicable.
  • Manage Hazard Operability, Process Hazard Analysis, Dust Hazard Analysis and Process Safety Testing studies.
  • Manage all Environmental Air, Water and Waste Programs (including but not limited to- SIU Permit, DPCC, SPCC, SWPP, Air Emission Reporting, RCRA Reporting, Air Permitting)
  • Manage and participate on the site Emergency Response Team (ERT) and conduct annual spill response drills.

 

Profile:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology or Toxicology with a minimum of 5-10 years’ experience in directing sites HSE activities at a pharmaceutical or fine chemicals facility.
  • Good working knowledge of OSHA general industry regulations per 29 CFR 1910 and a basic understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) as per ICH Q7A and FDA Regulation in 21 CFR.
  • Familiarity with PSM, DPCC, SPCC, SWPP, DHA, PHA, Air Emissions Reporting, SIU Self Monitoring Reporting and State and Federal regulatory inspections.
  • Experience in environmental and transportation safety regulations per 40 CFR and 49 CFR such as hazardous waste management, air & water permitting and hazardous materials shipments.
