Environmental and Sustainability Specialist

Summary:
To oversee multiple health, safety and environmentally impactful programs ran on-site regarding pharmaceutical manufacturing. Guarantees compliance with regulatory agencies, EHS corporate initiatives, and site requirements for multiple ongoing Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programs and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

Provides strategic and technical leadership to ensure compliance with EHS regulations, company policies and standards, sustainability commitments, and best practices. Provides subject matter expertise and leadership in sustainability. Champions initiatives to positively transform the organization and impact Key Performance Indicator (KPI) improvements.

* This position mainly focuses on environmental compliance.

Essential Functions:
Leads site environmental program compliance with all Federal, State, Local and Corporate regulations and guidelines. Directs the administration of existing programs, the implementation of modifications to programs to reflect regulatory changes and the development of new programs to assure continuing compliance. Will lead the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.

Responsibilities include initial site certification, employee training, and all requirements for obtaining certification and recertification every three years.

  • Conducts technical evaluations and cost analyses of regulatory and operational impacts for existing facilities and for new or proposed projects using science, engineering and management principles.
  • Submits required reports and correspondence to government regulatory agencies, to customers, and to corporate EHS within specified timelines.
  • Leader, representative and negotiator for the site environmental programs with government regulatory agencies during permitting, permit renewals and site inspections.
  • Be on call for, respond to, and participate in site emergency incidents. This includes making plans and decisions that protect the health and safety of employees and the public; minimize the impact to the environment; help ensure the safe and efficient return to normal business operations; maintain reputation with clients and the public.
  • Gains knowledge of latest technology and business trends via attendance to outside seminars, defined training plans, and reviewing best practice literature and related materials.
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) on sustainability with responsibilities to lead the EHS team towards meeting or exceeding industry, government, and client expectations; advise Corporate EHS on sustainability concepts, trends, strategies to satisfy industry, government, and client expectations.
  • Develop environmental objectives and goals for the EHS team; through others, translate those goals and objectives into achievable goals and actions.
  • Supports initiatives through partnerships with internal and external resources and securing funding enterprises where available. With the overarching goal of prevention through design, identifies and evaluates EHS impacts of new projects (building, equipment, etc.), products, and changes to existing products and infrastructure.
  • Participates as EHS Lead on assigned Project Team with responsibility to assure EHS support to Project Leader during design, in project execution or product development/manufacturing to meet EHS requirements and standards.
  • Mentors/develops Project Team in EHS culture, methodology and requirements.
  • Develops, improves, and implements EHS compliance and best practice programs, utilizing Lean/Six Sigma concepts and through SOPs, work practices, and training to site employees and contractors.
  • Sustains knowledge and technical skillsets to support other EHS Programs when needed.
  • Assists in preparation of and is accountable for the EHS capital projections and operations expense.
  • Represents the site on environmental matters to employees, leadership team, clients, Patheon corporate, community, trade associations, contractors. Leads and performs internal EHS audits and inspections of the site.
  • As assigned, responsible to represent EHS programs during external, corporate and 3rd party audits of the site. As assigned, serves as host and facilitates preparation for external, corporate and 3rd party audits of site. Eager to learn and take on additional EHS Department responsibilities.
