This position is responsible for maintaining a comprehensive environmental audit program and the oversight of Amtrak’s system-wide compliance with federal, state, local environmental laws, and regulations. The goals of this oversight are to ensure that critical Environmental Auditing QA and QC processes are in place and in compliance with Federal, State, and local environmental laws and regulations.

This position is responsible for identifying and improving compliance with the environmental laws and Amtrak policies and procedures. The auditor prepares audit reports and presentations to executive management. Provides oversight on facility corrective action plans. Trains Amtrak management and craft personnel, as needed, on audit forms and procedures, as well as on corrective action plan development.


  • Conduct environmental audits to ensure compliance with all Federal, State, and Local environmental laws and regulations and Amtrak standards, rules, and policies.
  • Manage the environmental program to ensure compliance with environmental laws, policies, procedures, and regulations of Amtrak Elements and measures include but are not limited to the following: Develop audit reports, make recommendations, and conduct QC follow-up.
  • Audit compliance records for adequate and correct use.
  • Ensure that proper training, coaching, and mentoring of employees at all levels is occurring in order to improve the understanding of and compliance with federal regulations.
  • Ensure that trend analysis is performed on compliance reviews and necessary correction, education,
  • training, and reporting.
  • Follow up with compliance reviews to ensure that required corrective action has occurred within related groups.
  • Model Amtrak values, as well as Amtrak’s leadership and technical competencies.
  • Support the state and federal regulators in their monitoring of Amtrak's environmental compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Maintain a working liaison with regulatory agencies, advocacy organizations, and contractors.
  • Communicate to management, labor officials, and employees as required to successfully perform the functions of the position. This may include but not be limited to informing, soliciting information, educating, preventing at-risk behaviors, and appropriately engaging and collaborating with others.
  • Utilize audit and root cause analysis findings to help the Environmental & Sustainability group in developing and updating Amtrak’s environmental policies, procedures, training, and capital plans.


  • Bachelor's Degree required or equivalent combination of training, education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • 6 years relevant experience required
  • Experience in QA/QC, regulatory compliance, or related experience.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of applicable environmental regulations, policies, programs.
  • Experienced with compliance and QA reviews and procedures and prior demonstrated experience setting up and supporting QA and QC systems.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or related field (or an equivalent combination of work
  • experience, training, and education in lieu of degree)
  • 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Superior effectiveness in communication skills, including writing, speaking, and presentation/platform.
  • Effective organizational, administrative, and personal computing skills as demonstrated through
  • experience.
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • ISO 14000 certification and experience with environmental auditing software
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, summarize, communicate, and act on quantitative and qualitative data
