AK Steel Rockport Works is currently seeking a Safety Engineer. This role works to provide a safe environment for steel production by performing regular audits at the work site, identifying opportunities for improvement, and implementing standard safety protocols.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborates with Safety and Health Management and fellow Safety Engineers, department heads, engineering, operating and maintenance personnel, outside contractors, government agencies for desired adherence to safety rules and regulations as they apply in the workplace. 
  • Provides instruction on safety rules to staff groups and contractors. 
  • Audits salaried and hourly personnel for conformance to established safety rules and policies. 
  • Audits safety meetings throughout the plant. 
  • Prepares safety presentations and tests to measure knowledge level of various groups.
  • Provides safety engineering assistance in assigned areas and/or special, plant-wide assignments involving present condition, new installations or revamped equipment for safe operation.
  • Responds as a member of the investigation team for incidents with injury, dropped blocks, ladle/vessel breakouts or loss of containment, fires requiring outside fire department response and incidents with fatality potential.
  • Follow up on incident investigations to ensure the final root cause was determined and all corrective actions were implemented.
  • Audits elements of the Safety and Health Plan utilizing AKSF – 25 Safety Department Audit Tracking Sheet
  • Works with assigned departments to drive injury and fatality prevention and hazard assessment efforts and activities.
  • Participates in safety improvement projects.
  • Performs safety program integrity inspections.
  • Audits toolbox and safety meetings
  • Conducts planned and unplanned observations as defined the Safety and health Plan. 
  • Monitors the unsafe condition report to ensure that all items are being corrected within a 30 day period or have a corrective action plan in place approved by the Department Manager for items that take longer than 30 days.


  • B.S. Degree in Safety and Health or a related field and/or relevant experience as determined by management
  • Must be computer proficient including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • ASP (Associate Safety Professional) Preferred
  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional) Preferred
