Safety & Health Specialist 3, Logging

 Are you passionate about worker safety? As a Safety and Health Specialist 3, you will conduct routine and complex Logging safety inspections in the industry to determine compliance with WISHA standards.  You'll also be responsible for writing reports, proposing penalties, investigating accidents, fatalities, complaints, referrals, and providing technical assistance in abatement of hazards.

  • Conduct both complex and journey-level safety inspections in the Logging Industry to include tower logging sites, shovel logging sites, steep slope logging sites, timber falling sites and any other sites that fall under the Logging Industry throughout the State of Washington to ensure compliance with 296-54 WAC.
  • Determine if employers are complying with safety and health standards, general duty clauses and safe employee exposure limits to health hazards.
  • Determine compliance or non-compliance with WISH Act and Safety and Health Standards and write reports documenting employee exposure along with proposed citations and monetary penalties as appropriate.
  • Present verbal and written reports of the investigation at the closing conference with employer and employee representatives covering the investigation findings; minimum standards that must be satisfied; offer suggestions for abatement; ensure abatements of hazards has been accomplished.
  • Perform thorough site inspections related to Logging workers performance, review paperwork, and ensure all safety efforts are performed correctly and within WAC criteria.
  • Thoroughly investigate accidents to determine root causes and contributing factors, provide documentation to back up conclusions and prepares detailed reports by assembling all information gathered during the investigation.




  • Experience in Logging, construction trades, or industries that have a higher than average experience factor.
  • Three (3) years as a Labor and Industries Safety and Health Specialist or Industrial Hygienist.


  • A Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience as a safety and health officer, consultant, inspector, or related experience.


  • Four (4) years of full-time experience in one or more of the following industries: logging, construction, manufacturing, fishing, agriculture, health/medical, service industry or related experience, and three years of experience as a safety and health officer, consultant, inspector, or related experience.

College level education will substitute, year for year, for up to four years of non-safety and health experience. One year of experience as a safety and health investigator.


  • A thorough understanding of both WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act) and OSHA (federal government's Occupational Safety and Health Administration) rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.  Extensive knowledge of the WISHA Compliance Manual and RCW 49.17.  Understands and is able to explain to customers what their businesses must do to comply with these regulations.


  • The position is bilingual preferred. If candidate is bilingual, and successfully completes HR bilingual testing, the candidate will communicate with internal and external customers in both English and their bilingual language.
