Safety & Health Specialist

Georgia-Pacific has an exciting opportunity for a Safety & Health Specialist at our Monticello, MS facility. This facility has been in operation since 1968 and employs approximately 450 employees. The Monticello mill has the capability to produce over 1,000,000 tons of containerboard each year. The mill is located on 2,200 acres in southwest Mississippi about 50 miles from Hattiesburg, MS, one hour from the capital city of Jackson, MS, and 130 miles from the beautiful Mississippi Gulf Coast.

This role will report directly to the Health & Safety Leader and will assist facility leadership with the design and implementation of a safety and health management system with an emphasis on compliance, critical hazards, and risk reduction. The selected individual will align closely with our company values and will serve as a role model and coach for other employees through the application of Georgia-Pacific’s MBM® framework and Guiding Principles, including safety & health compliance and achievement of mill and corporate safety objectives.

A Day In The Life Typically Includes:

  • Providing leadership and direction to achieve the safety & health vision through management commitment and employee ownership
  • Facilitating the organization’s safety & health ownership through integration of the safety & health management system
  • Assisting with the development and utilization of risk assessment methods/systems for anticipating, identifying and evaluating hazards
  • Assisting employees in aligning to a vision of lower risk tolerance/preference
  • Assisting facility leadership with the development of short and long-term safety & health objectives, targets, strategies, and measures that identify critical hazards, prioritize, and mitigate risks
  • Assisting with the evaluation, interpretation, and compliance with safety and health laws, regulations and permits as it relates to the operation of the facility
  • Providing a good foundation and solid understanding of Georgia-Pacific safety and health standards and all OSHA and Federal and State regulations
  • Managing the mill industrial hygiene programs to include HazCom, respiratory protection, asbestos, radiation and industrial hygiene monitoring
  • Facilitating the development, improvement, and implementation of safety training systems and effectively train mill population
  • Participating with facility leaders during agency inspections
  • Supporting the process safety and chemical process safety programs

What You Will Need:
Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety & Health, Industrial Hygiene, or other safety, technical, or engineering field
  • Three (3) years or more of safety & health experience in an industrial and/or heavy manufacturing industry
  • Experience using Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint

What Will Put You Ahead?
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years’ or more of safety & health experience in an industrial and/or heavy manufacturing industry
  • Experience and knowledge in PSM covered processes
  • GSP, ASP, CSP, CIH or equivalent certification
  • Experience in heavy manufacturing and/or chemical processes
  • Experience in evaluating and managing injuries and illnesses
