Safety Manager

The Levy Company is a heavy highway and electrical construction company headquartered in Selma, Texas, on the outskirts of San Antonio.  With more than 18 years of successful projects, led by founders with over 60 years of combined experience, The Levy Company has the proven skills and knowledge to safely and efficiently complete roadway and electrical projects of any size.

We are currently seeking a Safety Manager to drive a safety and risk management culture by providing leadership and tactical direction for the Company’s safety initiatives and property loss control programs.

Essential Functions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Review, evaluate, and analyze work environments to design and recommend programs, processes, and procedures to control, eliminate, and / or prevent occupational injuries and illnesses, property damage, and general liability claims.
  • Proactively lead and assume ownership for building a safety culture by anticipating problems, providing solutions, sharing knowledge, and through interactions with management and field employees.
  • Partner with field operations and Company management to integrate safety processes, practices, goals, and resources with Company strategies in support of a safety culture.
  • Collaborate with Project Administration to ensure to manage contract safety compliance.
  • Investigate, document, and maintain records related to general liability claims, and serve as point of contact with carriers.
  • Work collaboratively with the HR Manager to manage occupational injuries / illnesses.
  • Thoroughly investigate accidents and incidents.
  • Lead and document root cause investigations.
  • Manage hazard assessment activities (to include JSAs).
  • Develop a proactive, high-performance safety team.
  • Maintain and update emergency response plans and procedures.
  • Provide post-investigation guidance for corrective measures, and escalate as needed to ensure that agreed-upon corrective actions occur.
  • Ensure that all job sites and work areas are inspected regularly by Company safety professionals for adherence to health and safety regulations, policies, and standard practices.
  • Design, recommend, and implement measures to promote safe work practices.
  • Partner with business areas, Training, and Human Resources to plan and conduct safety training and education programs.
  • Demonstrate proper use of safety equipment.
  • Ensure the availability of safety prevention and response equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and ensure that SDSs are available to the workforce.
  • Partner with insurance carriers to conduct periodic review of safety practices.
  • Actively collaborate with Fleet Services Manager to ensure the safety of mobile equipment.
  • Measure safety performance against objectives through well-designed, simple, and effective monitoring and response processes and supporting systems.

Required Qualifications:

  • Five or more years of experience as a safety professional.
  • One or more years leading a structured safety program.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or a combination of formal education, related certifications, and significant experience beyond the five years required.
  • Certification as a safety professional (CSP, CSHO, or other related certification).
  • Experience using and proficiency with safety tracking and reporting software.
  • Valid Texas driver license with satisfactory driving record.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Construction experience in a safety, training, or field role.
  • Certified OSHA trainer.
  • Bilingual, English-Spanish.

 Required Competencies:

  • In-depth technical knowledge of construction related OSHA, federal, and state regulatory standards.
  • Advanced knowledge of construction safety equipment.
  • Advanced root cause investigation experience.
  • Advanced ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement corrective measures.
  • Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to appropriately influence and motivate employees and leaders across the organization.
  • Proficient in using MS Outlook, Word, and basic Excel.
  • Skilled in gathering and analyzing information to resolve problems promptly.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability and commitment to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to effectively manage electronic and physical files.
  • Ability to prioritize and plan work activities and use time efficiently.
  • Demonstrated accuracy and thoroughness
  • Ability to monitor own work and that of others to ensure quality.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, manage work demands, and deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
  • Ability to follow and provide oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision and solicit feedback to improve performance.
  • Ability and commitment to meet deadlines.

Working Environment:

Work is performed in both indoor environments, sitting or standing and using a computer or other office equipment for long periods of time, and in outdoor environments with constant exposure to noise, dust, fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, moving objects, sharp edges, and temperature extremes.

Physical Demands:

  • Standing for up to eight (8) hours per day.
  • Lifting and / or exerting of force up to 30 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 5 pounds constantly.
  • Walking, bending, and squatting for extended periods of time.
  • Frequent climbing steps, ladders, and in/out/onto vehicles.
  • Frequent stooping, twisting, crawling, kneeling, reaching, and crouching.
  • Occasional work on ladders, in lifts, and on structures at elevated heights.
  • Visual acuity to drive, perform manual detailed work, and to read printed and electronic documents.
  • Hearing capacity to receive, perceive, and react to common construction and road environment noises.
  • Manual dexterity to manipulate, handle, and feel.
  • Frequent operating of motor vehicles and mobile equipment.
  • Constant use of personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary for working safely.
