Site Occupational Safety & Health Manager

We are seeking an Occupational Safety & Health Manager to formulate, implement and communicate occupational safety and health compliance initiatives. The successful candidate will manage company safety programs, policies and procedures, and monitor safety performance through communication, education, and performance management. An ideal candidate will be knowledgeable of the policies and regulations of occupational health, and safety programs and have experience implementing enterprise-wide safety initiatives.  

Job context:
The Nouryon Surface Chemistry business unit manufactures a complex product line of over 800 products and formulations for the Petroleum, Agricultural, Mining, Detergent, Personal Care, Industrial and Institutional Cleaning markets.  Business has been primarily formulation driven and manufacturing expertise and service is critical to ensure value is delivered to the customer.  

Purpose/key objective of the position:
As a Manager you will be responsible for the development and implementation of a safety and health strategy for the site. This position focuses on the tactical and execution of the health and safety initiatives for the Salisbury site.  This includes ensuring all aspects of Health and Safety programs such as PSM, incident management, OSHA regulatory compliance, injury prevention, and industrial hygiene meet all operational requirements and generate continual improvements for these standards.  

Position in the Organization: 

  • Reports to: Site Director 
  • One Over Manager: Regional Operations Director, Surface Chemistry Americas  
  • Supervision of: No direct reports  
  • Main Technologies: Solution Polymer Polymerizations. Solvent Recovery Systems, Solid/Liquid Separation, and Drying Technologies, Powder Handling and Processing, Monomer Intermediates.  
  • Main Products: Cellulose Polyquaturnium Polymers, Acrylate based Polymers for Hair Spray and Hair Styling, Moisturizing Polymers for Skin Care Applications, and Sulfonated Polystyrene Polymers for Industrial Applications. 
     

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Design occupational safety and health requirements and metrics and advise business leaders about company impacts
  • Lead in the development and implementation of long and short-term planning, policies, programs and objectives involving safety and health
  • Research, develop and implement new policies, practices, procedures, or guidelines as they relate to safety and health, and provide ongoing communication in these areas
  • Ensure Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) compliance and manage OSHA programs and procedures
  • Develop, facilitate and provide training in health and safety areas
  • Perform safety audits, and implement changes from findings
  • Ensure proper chemical handling and disposal, and proper reporting
  • Manage workers compensation program
  • Chair Management of Change Committee
  • Support and participate in PSM program
  • PSM Champion for Incident Investigation, Emergency Planning and Response, and Process Safety Information for Substance Register
  • Serve on Local Emergency Planning Committee for Rowan County
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and regulations
  • Conduct accident investigations, write up reports detailing health and safety issues, and ensure implementation of any corrective actions
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations
  • Serve as back-up to any Environmental matters
  • Other auditing functions as applicable
     

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Four-year degree in occupational safety or related technical field required, some chemistry coursework essential.
  • 8-10 years occupational safety, health, and training experience in a heavy manufacturing industry required. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Chemicals, pharmaceuticals or other process industry experience preferred.
  • Certified Safety Professional preferred.
  • PSM (Process Safety Management) experience preferred. 

The successful candidate must possess the following Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and regulatory requirements, Workers’ Comp Laws, and general industrial hygiene practices.
  • Capable of preparing and presenting training sessions to all levels of site employees on topics related to occupational safety and health.
  • Work well under pressure and within time constraints, multi-task, and build sound relationships with both internal and external customers.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Capable of independently making sound decisions through creative problem-solving and detailed requirements-gathering.
  • The ability to work well with others in a fast-paced industrial environment.
  • Capable of working with ambiguity and change.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Strong computer skills required including Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
